Three from Marian baseball selected as CSC Academic All-District

Three student-athletes from the Marian University baseball program have been named Academic All-District by the organization College Sports Communicators (CSC).

The CSC Academic All-American program recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their efforts both in competition and in the classroom.  To be eligible, a student-athlete must compete in 90 percent of their team’s games, or start in at least 66 percent of games, and attain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5. They must also hold at least sophomore standing at their institution.  Pitchers must have made at least 17 appearances or logged at least 35 innings.

Junior Marc Jones (Whitewater, Wis.) was a staple in the middle of the Marian lineup all season long to earn All-NACC honors and his first CSC Academic All-District honor.  He appeared in all 38 games this season hitting .336 with a .392 slugging percentage.  Jones led the team with his nine doubles and was second on the squad with 47 base knocks.  He had multi-hit efforts in 16 games this season with three-hit performances against Concordia Chicago and game one against Lakeland.  His consistent offense saw him held without a hit in only seven games where he recorded an official at bat.  Jones drove in multiple runs in five games with four of those performances seeing him drive in three runs.  In the second game of the Dominican series, Jones was 2-for-5 with three runs driven in and a pair of runs scored.

Sophomore Ayden Kanaman (New London, Wis.) had a breakout season at the plate to earn All-NACC recognition and his first CSC Academic All-District award.  Kanaman led Marian in batting average finishing the season 14th in the NACC at .370.  He also ranked 19th in the conference with his 51 base knocks, and 16th in the NACC for on-base percentage at .463.   Kanaman started in all 38 games this season recording multiple hits 16 times.  His season-best was a five-hit performance in game one at Wisconsin Lutheran where he was 5-for-6 with three runs driven in and a run scored.  He had hitting streaks of seven and eight games during the season with six multi-hit games during his eight-game hitting streak.  Kanaman also drove in multiple runs in six games with four runs driven in in game one against Lakeland and game two against Dominican.  On the base paths, he ranked third in the NACC with his 20 stolen bases while only being caught once.  That speed was also beneficial out in center field where he had 101 putouts and posted a .971 fielding percentage.

Junior Carson McLean (Iron Mountain, Mich.) was on of the most utilized arms for the Sabres to earn his first CSC Academic All-District honor.  McLean was the winningest pitcher for Marian going 4-1 and appeared in a team-high 14 games with 40.0 total innings pitched.  In one of his two starts this season, McLean led Marian to a win over St. Vincent allowing two earned runs over 6.0 innings of work.  It proved to be his second win of the annual spring trip.  Then at Rockford, he went 5.0 innings to earn a win over Rockford allowing only on earned run.  His fourth win of the season came against Dominican where he threw 5.0 innings of relief work where he allowed just one unearned run scattering three hits and striking out a season-high six hitters.
