Senator Feyen Statement on Special Session

Legislature fails to approve property and income tax relief

State Senator Dan Feyen (R-Fond du Lac) released the following statement after the State Legislature failed to approve property tax and income tax relief during the special session of the Legislature:

“The State of Wisconsin currently has a projected $2.75 billion budget surplus sitting in the coffers in Madison. Let’s be clear: this surplus is the direct result of over-taxation. This money is your money, and with the ongoing affordability crisis, it belongs back in your pocket. That’s why I voted for a piece of legislation that would have done just that.

“First and foremost, this legislation would have provided immediate relief by returning $870 million of the surplus directly to taxpayers via surplus payment checks. In the face of rising costs, this would have sent your money right back out the door with up to $300 going to single filers and up to $600 going to married couples filing jointly.

“It’s no secret that property taxes are wildly out of control statewide. This bill would have made headway on addressing these skyrocketing property taxes and fulfilled our budget promise of raising the reimbursement rates for special education. As one of the largest costs for schools, additional investment in special education would have worked to eliminate the need to go to referendum. This would have been a great first step toward alleviating the stress on your wallet from Governor Evers’ irresponsible 400-year veto.

“With shortages in nearly every sector of our workforce, we should be rewarding hard work, not punishing it. That’s why we sought to eliminate the state income taxes on tips and on overtime pay to provide long-term relief to hardworking Wisconsinites.

“While this legislation was far from perfect, it’s important to remember that in divided government, compromise is necessary. As legislators, our constituents sent us to Madison to make our state a better place to live, work, and raise a family. I am incredibility disappointed that so many of my colleagues would rather play games with your money rather than fulfil that duty.

As your State Senator, it is my promise to you that I will continue to advocate for policies that will make your life more affordable.”
