Marian flag football caps inaugural season at NACC tournament

Marian University women’s flag football (10-4) closed out its season at the NACC Tournament, pushing eventual NACC champion Aurora to overtime in the semifinals before blanking Benedictine 34-0 in the consolation game.

GAME 1 | Semifinals vs. Aurora (L, 7-6 / OT)

  • In a defensively dominated matchup, neither team found themselves with a red zone possession in the first half.
  • Freshman Kendall Graves had three interceptions in the first half, as Aurora was shut out in a half for the first time this season. 
  • Marian marched down to the goal line in the third quarter, but was stopped on fourth down. 
  • In overtime, Aurora drove down the field, as quarterback Kaylin Morgan found Jennah Grice for an eight-yard touchdown. Ja’Mya Anderson added a successful one-point rush to give the Spartans a seven-point lead. 
  • On the following drive, Marian responded when freshman Holly Goodwin connected with Graves to bring the Sabres within one. The Sabres elected to go for the win on a two-point try, which fell incomplete. 
  • Aurora advanced to the NACC Championship Game against Rockford, while Marian moved to the consolation game. 

GAME 2 | Consolation Game vs. Benedictine (W, 34-0)

  • The opening drive saw Goodwin connect with sophomore Emily Eastham for a 31-yard gain, but a fourth-and-three incompletion ended the drive.
  • Sophomore Nyedeng Awak hauled in a five-yard touchdown on the first play of the second quarter, her second of the season. 
  • Goodwin and Graves connected for two touchdowns in the first half, including a 17-yard strike for the second. 
  • Midway through the third, sophomore Sofia Vizcarra intercepted a Benedictine goal-line pass, returning it 31 yards. 
  • Sophomore Raegan Montello added an interception in the fourth quarter as Marian cruised to the shutout win.

GAME 1

  • Aurora entered the game averaging 37.9 points per game.
  • The Sabres intercepted four Aurora passes and limited the Spartans to 24 rushing yards on 1.7 yards per carry.
  • Marian ran 60 plays, 24 more than Aurora, but averaged just 2.7 yards per play.
  • The Sabres converted just 1-of-8 fourth-down attempts. 
  • The Spartans swept the season series against Marian following a 41-15 win at Aurora on April 4. 

GAME 2

  • Graves finished her freshman season with 764 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns, ranking among the NCAA Division III leaders in both categories. 
  • Marian posted its sixth shutout of the season. 
  • The Sabres passed for a season-high 235 passing yards, with Montello and sophomore Daniela Chaname taking additional snaps at quarterback. 
  • In three meetings this season, Marian held Benedictine scoreless and won by an average of 37.3 points.

Freshman Kendall Graves had three interceptions in game one and added three touchdowns on the day. 
Freshman Holly Goodwin passed for 145 yards and four touchdowns in game two, her fifth game this season with at least four total touchdowns. 
Sophomore Sofia Vizcarra had an interception in each game, returning the second for 31 yards.
