Mandolidis serves as assistant coach for Team Greece at Challenger Series

Assistant NCAA men’s ice hockey coach Alex Mandolidis recently served as an assistant coach for Team Greece during the opening leg of the Challenger Series.

“It was a special experience to represent Team Greece and be part of a tournament that continues to grow the game internationally,” said Mandolidis. “I’m thankful to Head Coach Spiros Anastas, Team Manager George Makricostas, and Team Consultant John Koufis for their support, and grateful to Marian University for supporting this opportunity to represent Greece.”

The Challenger Series is a global platform for emerging hockey nations to prove their skill, gain elite competition experience, and inspire the next generation of players.   Founded in 2024, the Challenger Series serves as a platform for associate members of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF).  The national rosters built for these nations feature elite talent ranging from NCAA Division III to players with professional experience.  The tournament is a two-legged competition with the winner based on the combined standings from both weekends of action.  Jamaica was the winner of the inaugural competition in 2024 followed by Greece last year.

This year the men’s portion of the Challenger Series consists of Greece, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Lebanon.  Team Greece is currently tied for first after the first portion of the tournament after going 2-1 with wins over Puerto Rico and Lebanon.

“The second leg will be more challenging, and we know every team will be better prepared,” said Mandolidis. “Our focus is continuing to improve, play consistent hockey, compete for a championship in Montreal, and build the game for players back in Greece.”

The second leg is slated for July 8-12 from Montreal, Quebec.
