Josie Birschbach, a registered nurse/lactation consultant with SSM Health St. Agnes Hospital Women’s Health, has been recognized as a recipient of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses, an international recognition program that honors nurses who provide exceptional clinical care and compassionate service to patients and families.
Birschbach was nominated by a patient who experienced a difficult hospitalization following complications from surgery. During a particularly vulnerable moment, the patient recalled the kindness, empathy, and support that Birschbach provided when she felt overwhelmed by both her physical condition and emotional challenges.
According to the nomination, Birschbach offered comfort and reassurance while the patient struggled with feelings of embarrassment and discouragement related to her recovery. Through gentle conversation and genuine compassion, she validated the patient’s feelings and reminded her that she was not alone. The patient shared that the interaction helped restore her sense of dignity during a difficult time.
“She was gentle and caring and made me feel human again,” the patient wrote in the nomination. “I truly appreciated her efforts in making me feel like a person instead of just another patient. She truly was my saving grace during a really dark time, and I will always be grateful for her kindness and support.”
The DAISY Award recognizes nurses who demonstrate exceptional clinical skills, leadership, and compassionate care. Recipients are nominated by patients, families and colleagues who wish to recognize nurses for the difference they make in the lives of others.
“Birschbach exemplifies the compassionate, person-centered care that is at the heart of our mission,” according to Loraine Carley, manager – SSM Health St. Agnes Hospital Inpatient OB/GYN. “Her ability to connect with patients during their most challenging moments and provide both clinical excellence and emotional support makes her highly deserving of this recognition.”
The DAISY Foundation was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died from complications of an autoimmune disease in 1999. The foundation honors the extraordinary nursing care Barnes and his family experienced during his illness.
