First and Last Name: Adam Schultz
Hometown: Oshkosh, WI
What Brought you to Fond du Lac: Work and Family
Place of Employment and Position: Mercury Marine – Consumer Care Product Support Specialist
What do you enjoy the most about your career?
I enjoy helping people. I take pride in knowing that I work for an organization that supports its consumers and dealers. Being part of a team that can be reached with a single phone call and no red tape for assistance is pretty unique this day in age, and we’re often praised for the level of support we can offer.
What words of wisdom would you share with other YP’s in relation to career building?
There is more to career building and development than education and certifications. I’ve built a career that I am proud of without a college degree. I have always asserted myself, remained open and eager to learn new skills offered to me, and always tried to be as helpful as I can be in any situation. Be confident in who you are, be a steward to those around you, and continue to show your managers and directors that you are someone worth investing in.
Who or what inspires and motivates you to be your best?
My family and community. I always try to be a role model for my children and others in my community. I look around and I am humbled by those I am surrounded by that give so much to the organizations and service clubs in this county, and it truly motivates me to find ways to give back in my free time, even though I have little of that to give at this stage in my life.
What are 3 Characteristics and/or Strengths that make you who you are?
Harmony, Communication and Relator are my top Clifton Strengths. It’s no surprise that a career in helping people solve problems has been what I enjoy the most. Whether it’s at work, an issue in the community, or even a family concern, being a good communicator who can assess a problem from several perspectives and bring common ground to a situation is what helps me each day.
What is your favorite thing to do in your free time/a hobby you enjoy?
I enjoy attending events in the community, playing a round on the golf course, and being a mentor and advisory council member for Envision Greater Fond du Lac’s Leadership program.
Name something you enjoy doing in the Greater Fond du Lac Area that others should check out:
As a family, we love to attend as many Fireman’s Picnics throughout the county as we can. They offer something fun for the whole family, and you can find one almost every weekend in the summer months.
What is your favorite part about being in YPF and how has it benefited you?
I’m not overly involved in everything YPF has to offer, but I have volunteered my time with a few of the events they’ve hosted in the last few years. My favorite part of YPF is seeing others in the community with so much drive and passion lift each other up. I think that YPF does a fantastic job of highlighting people in the community who are doing great things. Things like Future 5, YP of the Month and Year, etc., are wonderful ways of showing the greater community that Fond du Lac is more than what is seen on the scanner pages. It is home to amazing people who have a dedication to making this community a positive place and a destination.
How do you engage in our community?
I enjoy volunteering my time at events that benefit the community and being an active mentor and committee member in Envision’s Leadership program.
Share a lesson you have learned or a nugget of advice with other YP’s:
“Are you living the life you chose, or are you living the life that chose you?” This is a question that has impacted me and made me think of things through a different lens. It’s easy to allow yourself to be pulled into too many directions and burn out. People will respect when you say no to things that don’t align with you or things you can’t give your everything to. Would I love to be on more committees and boards? Yes. Do I have the bandwidth and ability to give them the attention they deserve? No. I help where I can, but I also try not to spread myself too thin.
What do you love about the Greater Fond du Lac Area today and what is your hope for its future in the years to come?
I love seeing this community continuing to grow and thrive. Things like Farmer’s Markets, Walleye Weekend, Fondue Fest, 13 Thursdays at Thelma, etc. are all things that make us a desirable destination. I hope that our next generation continues carrying the torch others have sparked and gets involved in ways that will keep our community progressing.
