Youth Apprentice of the Month – March 2020: Nick Pitts

Hometown:      Eldorado
High School:     Laconia High School
Youth Apprenticeship Pathway and Site:  Manufacturing at Kondex Corporation

What has been the biggest surprise about your Youth Apprenticeship? My biggest surprise has been how many different careers there are in manufacturing. There is such a wide range of careers that you can have in a manufacturing company.

What is your favorite part about participating in the Youth Apprenticeship (YA) Program? My favorite part is getting to experience jobs that you normally wouldn’t until you are 18 and join the workforce. It is a great way to learn more about careers that you are interested in before you even finish high school.

What is your favorite subject in school? Tech Ed (Shop)

When you’re not in school or at your YA site, what can we find you doing? I like to ride snowmobiles in the winter, and dirt bikes in the summer. When I am not doing that I like to go hunting and fishing.

If you could give a student that is thinking about YA any advice, what would it be? I think that doing a YA is a great idea. I believe that you only benefit from doing a YA. Doing a YA is a great way to explore careers that interest you, and build relationships with companies in the community that can help you later in life.

What are your plans after high school? I do not know for sure what I want to do after high school. I would like to start a career doing repair/maintenance work or in the trades.

Comment from site supervisors: “Nick has a great work ethic and always willing to do and learn more.  Would love to have him back.” and “Nick displays a strong focus on the job at-hand, is easy to coach, and has caught on quickly to various machining processes within the Lawn & Turf Department.  He has also proven to be very mature, punctual, and reliable.  He has helped us out greatly by volunteering his time during this extremely unusual environment we find ourselves in.  We thank Nick for his willingness to help Kondex feed and fuel the world!”

Benefits of the Youth Apprenticeship Program are multi-fold in that the program helps students prepare for careers while still in high school, but also develops the technical and employability skills that community employers are looking for.
