Wills becomes all-time kills leader in Marian men’s volleyball victory

Marian University men’s volleyball (10-11, 3-3 NACC) defeated North Park in five sets to close out the Cal-Lu-Fornia Inviational; 21-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-27, 15-9.

  • North Park opened the match with a 5-2 lead and it proved to be all they needed in the opening set.
  • The largest Viking lead for most of the set was only three points but Marian was unable to close the gap.
  • Marian opened with a 7-6 lead to open the second before scoring six straight points to lead 13-6.
  • The Sabres built their lead to as large as 11 thanks to a 5-1 run later in the set in a dominating win.
  • After a 7-7 start to the third, Marian took a sizable lead after a 6-1 run.
  • Similarly to the opening set, the Vikings stayed within striking range, including fending off three set-point chances, but Marian was able to hold NPU off and lead 2-1.
  • The fourth set opened to an 11-11 stalemate but it was North Park this time who used a 6-1 run to take the first large cushion.
  • Marian rallied with a 7-2 run later to tie the set at 23-23.
  • The Sabres were able to fight off two set-point opportunities, but the Vikings converted the third to force a fifth set.
  • North Park had a slim 5-4 lead to open the fifth before Marian scored five unanswered to lead by four.
  • The Sabres used a 4-1 run shortly after to maintain its cushion the rest of the way and finish its trip to California on a high note.

  • Marian had a 63-59 edge for kills and 72-60 advantage for digs in the win.
  • The Sabres hit .311 for the match and had eight kills to only one error with a .389 attack percentage in the fifth set.
  • Senior Derek Wills became the all-time leader for kills and now sits at 1,330 kills.
  • The Sabre block had a strong game finishing with a 9-4 edge in the category.
  • Marian improves to 2-2 this season in five-set matches, and are also 2-2 all-time against NPU.

Senior Derek Wills had a match-high 16 kills and became the all-time leader for kills in Marian men’s volleyball history.
Senior Isaac Dreifuerst also had 16 kills and hit .275.
Senior Aaron Velasco posted a career-high 30 digs.
