DESCRIPTION

Position: Director of Business Intelligence

Reports to: VP of Economic Development

FSLA Status: Exempt

Work schedule: As required by the duties of the position and as outlined by the VP of Economic Development or President.

Travel expectation: As necessary for client meetings, professional development, seminars and conferences, as outlined by the VP of Economic Development

Position summary: Under direction of the VP of Economic Development, conduct and communicate regional community and economic research and manage research program to support client services. The Director of Business Intelligence is responsible for all points of data extraction, manipulation, analysis and reporting for Envision Greater Fond du Lac.

Essential Duties, Responsibilities and Accountabilities: Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

Community and Economic Research

· Maintaining current data on local/regional/state economic indicators such as demographics, business trends and quality of life issues.

· Maintaining knowledge/data on local economy through primary and secondary research.

· Analyzing and updating target industry clusters to promote development and growth of key clusters for the region.

Business Intelligence (BIS)/Market Research to Support Client Services

· Maintaining current and identifying new database subscriptions that support the Business Intelligence Services.

· Meeting with clients to determine market research needs, developing a list of research questions, and providing Scope of Work contracts.

· Conducting secondary market research to supply businesses with timely, relevant, and actionable information about their competitors, industry, and markets. Mining information from online databases, geographic information systems, trade associations, and government websites to glean useful information to increase client competitiveness.

· Developing and deploying questionnaires for clients and Envision Greater Fond du Lac when primary research is needed. Interpret, report, and communicate results.

· Creating client reports that summarize, synthesize, and analyze information. Translating data into infographics and other mechanisms to display data in an easy to understand format.

· Assisting VP of Economic Development in promoting and growing the Business Intelligence program into a profit center for Envision Greater Fond du Lac.

· Gaining mastery and continuing to develop skills with various database tools. Staying abreast of data that continues to become available. Providing tools and training to assist clients who need to learn methods for managing their growing business.

· Assisting in the development and maintenance of the BRE primary employer lists and surveys.

· Tracking success of BIS/research program and tools used in terms of client success by documenting services provided and surveying clients for specific measurable indicators of success.

Marketing Support

· Assisting with research, compiling data, and updating the corporate website for marketing the region.

· Assisting with the creation of flyers, posters, brochures, and infographics for Envision Greater Fond du Lac BIS.

· Assist in writing press releases, newsletter articles, blogs and other communications as needed for Business Intelligence.

· Assisting with program events of Envision Greater Fond du Lac

· Developing case studies that exhibit the value of BIS services.

Professional Development

This function includes but is not limited to peer networking, delivering topical presentations to various audiences, and the completion of courses and seminars as agreed upon with the VP of Economic Development and the President.

Other Duties and Special Activities

· Assisting with grant research and writing for the development needs of the organization.

· Providing relevant, synthesized research and analysis in response to various ad-hoc requests.

· Conduct human subjects/behavioral research for area employers as necessary to assist in employer recruitment and retention efforts. This may include survey development and administration, interviews, and other services.

· Other duties as necessary for this job function or as requested by the VP of Economic Development or the President.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty, listed above, satisfactorily. Additionally, the position requires the individual to have the following desired skills:

· Self-starter: take initiative and be willing to learn new skills and tools (you “wear many hats” and often work on an individual basis so drive and leadership are important).

· Strong technical/computer skills: Outlook, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and possesses the ability to learn quickly research data bases, graphical information systems e.g., Esri), and other relevant tools (e.g., EMSI, D&B Hoovers).

· Analytical: Demonstrated ability to gather, interpret, and translate data into usable information that can be easily communicated to clients in a non-technical manner.

· Detail Oriented: focused, ability to identify data errors prior to reporting/publication ability to catch errors before data publication.

· Problem Solver: curious with a desire to dig deeper to find relevant data and solutions.

· Strong written and verbal communication skills plus interpersonal skills used to correspond clearly and concisely with clients, Envision Greater Fond du Lac team members and Board, and broader audiences.

· Eye for data visualization: ability to create appealing reports and documents that catch the eye and draws in the using programs such as Microsoft PowerPoint and Canva.

· Works well in a team environment as well as independently.

· Flexible & Adaptable: ability to shift quickly between multiple different projects and gauge priorities.

· A driving desire to make a difference.

· Encompasses a “warrior’s attitude” and focus to get things done.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree. Focus in business administration, social sciences, or related field is a plus. Minimum of one to three years institutional, human subjects/behavioral, or marketing research experience preferred. Experience designing and conducting primary research studies is desired.

INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS: Strong interpersonal skills are needed for work with area companies, working with the general public, the Envision Greater Fond du Lac team, the President, and the Board of Directors.

CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION: Required to work with and safeguard confidential information. Confidentiality is regularly entrusted and would result in the loss of the client’s trust and business if not handled properly.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common industry/market intelligence, financial reports, relevant journal publications, and other business intelligence, as needed. Ability to write effectively to communicate to senior management of client firms and funding entities, public groups, and the Board of Directors.

MATHMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with math and understand concepts including but not limited to such as simple probability, descriptive and inferential statistics, and statistical inference and as well as basic mathematical concepts such as, but not limited to: fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Standard deviation, central tendencies and their appropriate usage, reliability, validity, statistical significance and effect sizes.

REASONING ABILITY: The position requires the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations where limited standardization exists.
