Junior Alex Vassilakis of Marian University men’s basketball has been named Academic All-District by the organization College Sports Communicators (CSC).
The CSC Academic All-American program recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their efforts both in competition and in the classroom. To be eligible, a student-athlete must compete in 90 percent of their team’s games, be a key starter or reserve on their team, and attain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5. They must also hold at least sophomore standing at their institution.
Vassilakis (Homer Glen, Ill.) made an immediate impact in his first season as a Sabre. He was one of just two Sabres to start in all 26 games during the season averaging 7.5 points per game to go with a team-high 7.5 rebounds per game. Vassilakis had a pair of double-doubles on the season going for 13 points and 10 rebounds against Illinois Tech and No. 17 Wisconsin Lutheran. He would grab double-digit rebounds in six games finishing third in the NACC with 2.62 offensive rebounds per game, and ninth in the conference for total rebounds. Vassilakis had double-digit points in eight games. One of his top performances came at Rockford where he shot 4-of-7 (.571) from beyond the arc as part of a season-high 18 points. He also had seven boards and a steal in the road victory.
