Upset bid falls just short for Sabre NCAA men’s hockey

Marian University men’s ice hockey (6-10-0, 3-6-0 NCHA) led after the opening period but fell to No. 5/7 Aurora 4-2.

  • The Sabres struck first with 8:08 left in the opening period when senior Daunte Fortner scored with an assist from freshman Edison Weeks.
  • Aurora immediately responded evening the score just 23 seconds later.
  • Marian struck back just as quickly when freshman Dayne Tews scored 1:18 later with assists from freshman Brendan Bottem and sophomore Nolan Flint.
  • The quick barrage saw Marian take its 2-1 advantage into the opening intermission.
  • Aurora was able to take its first lead of the game scoring at the 9:24 mark and with just 3:29 left in the period.
  • The final period saw the Spartans close out the game with an empty-net goal with 20.9 ticks left to put the final at 4-2.

  • Marian was outshot by a 34-26 margin for the game and the Spartans had a 34-26 edge in face-offs.
  • Neither team had a power-play goal with Marian having just one chance on the power play and Aurora two.
  • The Sabre penalty kill didn’t allow a shot on goal on either power play.
  • Marian falls to 10-8-1 all-time against Aurora and just 3-6-1 on the road.
