Tough stretch continues for Sabre women’s basketball

Marian University women’s basketball (3-11, 1-4 NACC) dropped its eighth straight game falling to Lakeland 75-61.

  • Lakeland held a small 9-7 lead but ended the opening quarter on a 15-4 run to lead 24-11 at the first stoppage.
  • Marian trailed by 11 with 4:34 left in the opening half before going on a quick 6-1 spurt to only trail 30-24 at halftime.
  • The Sabres held Lakeland to only six points in the second stanza.
  • Marian was able to trim its deficit to as small as three at 42-39 with 4:00 left in the third quarter.
  • Another strong finish to the quarter saw Lakeland build a 50-42 advantage going into the final stanza.
  • Using the momentum from the strong finish to the third, the Muskies broke the game open with a 10-2 run to open the final stanza.
  • The Sabres kept pace the rest of the way but Lakeland closed out its 75-61 victory.

  • Marian finished 22-of-58 (.379) and 5-of-18 (.278) from beyond the arc.
  • The Sabres also had a tough game at the charity stripe going just 12-of-23 (.522).
  • Lakeland was 30-of-72 (.417) from the field with the Sabre defense holding the Muskies to 3-of-18 (.167) on triples.
  • The Marian defense was able to force 25 turnovers, the third most in a game this season.
  • Lakeland finished with a 46-32 edge for points in the paint.
  • Marian is now just 10-61 against Lakeland with six straight defeats.

Senior McKayla Goebel grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds, eight offensive and eight defensive.
Senior Lyla Bartol chipped in 10 points with a pair of assists.
