Tough Day for Sabre Women’s Volleyball to Finish Stinger Classic

Marian University women’s volleyball (4-4, 0-0 NACC) fell to St. Scholastica in three sets and Martin Luther in five sets to close out the Stinger Classic.

ST. SCHOLASTICA (25-17, 25-19, 25-23)

  • The Marian offense had a tough time in the opening match of the day as the Sabres had a negative hitting percentage in the first two sets against St. Scholastica.
  • The Sabres made things interesting in the third set after trailing 22-17.
  • Marian was able to score four straight points but could only cut the deficit down to one suffering a sweep.

MARTIN LUTHER (25-17, 25-22, 16-25, 19-25, 15-9)

  • Facing Martin Luther for a second straight weekend, the second match-up was just as thrilling as the first.
  • A fast start in the first set saw Martin Luther cruise to a win and the Knights jumped out to a 14-8 lead to open the second.
  • Marian was able to show life scoring 10 straight points to take a four-point lead.
  • Martin Luther was able to bounce back, however, finishing the set with an 11-4 spurt.
  • The Sabres finally found a rhythm, though, and opened the third with a 20-14 advantage.
  • Marian didn’t allow MLC back in the match scoring the final five points to take its first set.
  • The Sabres continued to use its momentum jumping out to a 7-2 lead in the fourth and eventually leading 20-12.
  • Martin Luther cut its deficit down to as little as four but Marian was able to force a decisive set.
  • The Sabres had a slow start to the fifth as MLC scored 11 of the first 15 points in the fifth.
  • Marian was able to trim its deficit down to five at 14-9 but Martin Luther was able to even the season series.

  • Marian had more kills, 35-29, and digs, 53-46, despite the loss against St. Scholastica.
  • The Sabres finished with a slim 47-46 advantage in kills against MLC, but the Knights had a 94-89 edge in digs.
  • The Saints had fewer kills in the opening match but hit .154 and held Marian to .017 attacking.
  • Marian remains winless all-time against St. Scholastica in three meetings, and MLC was able to even the all-time series at three wins apiece.

Sophomore Ryanne Jasica had a double-double in both matches going for 17 kills and 10 digs against CSS, and 11 kills with 11 digs against MLC.
Senior Riley Shores had nine digs and three service aces against CSS and then had 14 digs against Martin Luther.
Junior Alana McDermott had a match-high 27 digs against Martin Luther, her third performance this season with at least 20 digs.
