Marian University Athletics has announced that Kim Sorensen has been promoted to an assistant athletic director role.
“I’m excited to announce the promotion of Kim Sorensen to assistant athletic director,” said Director of Athletics Tony Draves. “She has been an integral part of Marian and the Athletic Department for over 20 years. I’m excited for her to take more of a leadership role in athletics and the campus as a whole. Congratulations to Kim!”
Sorensen joined the Sabres in 2000 as the first-ever full-time athletic trainer. She has served as the head of the Marian sports medicine staff ever since adding roles in compliance and as the Senior Woman Administrator (SWA) for Marian Athletics. The impact of Sorensen has been felt outside of Marian as well at both the conference and national level. Sorensen currently is the chair member for the NACC SWA committee and has held a similar position in the past for the athletic trainers of the conference. With the SWA group, she also served as the certified chief executive officer. At the national level, Sorensen is currently a committee member for the NCAA Division III Ice Hockey Championship.
“I would like to thank Director of Athletics Tony Draves for his continued support of me and my administrative career,” said Sorensen. “I look forward to continuing our work together to provide an outstanding experience for our student-athletes.
Prior to Marian, Sorensen served as a graduate assistant and interim head athletic trainer at the College of Saint Benedict while she completed her master’s degree in sports medicine from St. Cloud State University. She managed all aspects of the athletic training department while designing strength and conditioning programs for various teams. Aside from her duties at St. Benedict, she worked at the St. Cloud Orthopedic Clinic and the St. John’s University and St. Cloud University athletic training departments.
The Neenah, Wis. native earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from UW-Oshkosh in 1997 where she also held the distinction of being a member of the inaugural women’s soccer team in 1993. That inaugural season saw Sorensen score the first-ever goal for the Titans and she led the team in scoring. In her two seasons on the team the Titans went 13-12-5 where she recorded 13 total points. In the classroom, she served as a student athletic trainer at UW-Oshkosh and ultimately received her National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification in 1998.
