Sabre women’s volleyball splits trip to St. Norbert

Marian University women’s volleyball (10-7, 2-3 NACC) was involved in a pair of sweeps in a triangular at St. Norbert falling to the Green Knights before defeating Ripon.

MARIAN VS. ST. NORBERT / 25-10, 25-14, 25-17

  • The Sabres started slowly and a 10-0 run from the Green Knights saw SNC lead 16-5 to open the match.
  • St. Norbert was able to close out the set scoring the final five points of the set.
  • The two squads opened the second tied at 10-10 only to SNC score eight unanswered points.
  • The Green Knights once again put the set away with a strong finish scoring four of the last five points.
  • Marian opened the third set with a slim 5-3 but SNC had another big run going on a 16-6 spurt to take an eight-point lead.
  • The Sabres cut the lead to six but couldn’t avoid the sweep.

MARIAN VS. RIPON / 25-23, 25-16, 25-13

  • The Sabres only got stronger as the match went on bouncing back with a non-conference win.
  • The largest lead of the opening set was only four points and saw Ripon use a 5-1 run to lead 17-16.
  • Marian responded with four straight points and never trailed the remainder of the set.
  • The Red Hawks were able to tie the set at 23-23, but a service error and kill from junior Riley Shores gave Marian its first win of the day.
  • Ripon jumped out to an early lead to open the second set but Marian settled in and the set was tied at 7-7.
  • Marian then scored seven unanswered points to build breathing room.
  • Marian was able to build its lead to as large as 11 points and finished out the set 25-16.
  • After a 10-7 start saw Marian lead, another seven-point run from the Sabres proved to be the difference.
  • Marian was able to build its lead to double-digits at the end of the set and scored three straight to close out the match.

MARIAN VS. ST. NORBERT

  • The Green Knight defense limited Marian to a -.019 hitting percentage and had seven blocks.
  • The SNC offense also held a 36-22 edge in kills.
  • St. Norbert has now won the last 13 matches against Marian.

MARIAN VS. RIPON

  • Marian finished with a 37-20 advantage in kills hitting .217 in the match.
  • The Sabre defense held up its end holding Ripon to -.022 hitting in the sweep.
  • This was the first match-up between the two schools since the spring of 2021, both Marian sweeps.

Junior Riley Shores bounced back after the SNC match to record a match-high 11 kills against Ripon.
Sophomore Alana McDermott had 21 digs on the day with 11 coming against St. Norbert.
Senior Serina Pehowski had 13 kills on the day and four total blocks, two being solo blocks.  Against Ripon, she had nine kills and hit .500.
