Sabre Women’s Volleyball Opens Play at Sandy Schumacher Tournament

Marian University women’s volleyball (4-5, 0-0 NACC) was swept by St. Catherine 25-18, 25-22, 25-20 to open the Sandy Schumacher Memorial Tournament, hosted by UW-Eau Claire.

  • An early 6-1 run at the beginning of the match gave SCU a 9-4 lead.
  • Marian battled and stayed within striking distance and only trailed 20-18 late in the set.
  • The Wildcats then rattled off five straight points to end the set.
  • The second began similarly with Marian leading 6-5 before the Wildcats went on a 6-1 run to lead by four points.
  • The Sabres took the lead back shortly after but both teams ultimately were met by a 15-15 stalemate.
  • SCU would take control of the set going on a 7-2 spurt to lead by five.
  • Marian responded with five straight points, however, to quickly tie the set at 2-2.
  • Just as the first set ended, the Wildcats scored three straight points to lead 2-0.
  • Marian jumped out to a 7-1 lead and used five unanswered points later in the set to lead 15-8.
  • The Wildcats were able to rally with a 13-3 spurt to lead 21-18.
  • The Sabres scored the next two points to only trail by one, but the Wildcats once again ended the third set, and the match, with four unanswered points.

  • St. Catherine had a slim 39-36 edge for kills and hit .205 for the match.
  • The battle in the back row was also tight but SCU had a slim 66-64 advantage.
  • The Sabre serve receive allowed 11 service aces in the match.
  • Marian has lost all four match-ups with St. Catherine in the all-time series.

Sophomore Ryanne Jasica nearly had a double-double recording a match-high nine kills with 15 digs.
Sophomore Janci Ige had a career-high 18 digs in the back row.
Freshman Kaylie Engebose had 27 assists, 14 digs, and a block assist.
