Sabre women’s volleyball defeated twice to finish home invitational

Marian University women’s volleyball (0-3, 0-0 NACC) was defeated in by Monmouth and Wheaton to close out its home invitational.

 VS. MONMOUTH (25-15, 25-22, 23-25, 25-11)

  • Monmouth opened the match with a 6-3 lead and used a 7-1 run later in the set to lead 16-8.
  • The Fighting Scots finished the set scoring six of the final eight points.
  • The second set opened 11-11 but Monmouth was able to pull away with a 7-1 run.
  • The Sabres fought back, however, using an 8-2 run later in the set to even up the score at 20-20.
  • Marian found themselves ahead 22-21, but Monmouth scored four straight points to go ahead 2-0.
  • Another Sabre rally happened in the third after Monmouth led 11-4.
  • Marian responded with a 15-6 stretch to lead 19-17.
  • The Fighting Scots tied the set at 22-22, but Maray was able to use a pair of kills from senior Harley Bartels to keep the match alive.
  • Monmouth opened with a 9-2 lead in the fourth and never looked back scoring eight unanswered shortly after to take the match.

VS. WHEATON (25-14, 27-25, 25-21)

  • Marian only trailed 11-8 to open the match but saw the Thunder score six straight points to pull away with an early lead.
  • The second set saw Marian score the first three points only for Wheaton to score eight straight.
  • The Sabres chipped away at the deficit and eventually retook the lead at 13-12.
  • The two squads went back-and-forth with the Thunder leading 23-21 but Marian stormed back and had a pair of set-point chances.
  • The Thunder fought off both of them, however, and scored the final three points of the set.
  • The third sent went back-and-forth as well with Marian holding a late 19-14 advantage.
  • The Sabres brought this lead out to 21-19 before Wheaton scored the final six points of the set to earn the sweep.

VS. MONMOUTH

  • Marian had more kills by a 43-38 clip and each side had 58 digs.
  • The Fighting Scots had 10 blocks and held Marian to a .064 hitting percentage with 34 Sabre errors.
  • Marian is 2-2 all-time against the Fighting Scots.

VS. WHEATON

  • Wheaton finished with a 47-32 edge in kills and 45-37 advantage in digs. 
  • The Thunder also hit .361 in the match, while Marian hit only .173.
  • Marian is now 2-7 all-time against Wheaton.

Senior Natalie Dempze-Enkro had nine kills in the match against Wheaton.
Senior Alana McDermott finished with 30 digs between the two matches.
Freshman Lily Breed had 50 assists on th day with seven kills and a double-double against Monmouth.
