Sabre Women’s Volleyball Battles Tough at Trine Triangular

Marian University women’s volleyball (5-9, 0-1 NACC) went five sets against DePauw and four sets against Trine in non-conference triangular.

VS. DEPAUW (24-26, 25-17, 25-17, 22-25, 15-12)

  • The opening set saw Marian and DePauw battle to a 20-20 deadlock.
  • The Tigers were able to take a 24-21 advantage only for the Sabres to score the next five points to take the set.
  • The second and third set had identical scores with the Tigers using a strong finish followed by a strong start to take a 2-1 advantage.
  • The Sabres took an 11-9 lead to open the fourth and expanded that lead with six straight points.
  • DePauw rallied to only trail 24-22 but a kill from sophomore Ryanne Jasica on the next point forced a fifth set.
  • Marian had a slim 10-7 lead to start the fifth and brought that advantage out to 12-10.
  • The Tigers then made their move scoring the next five points to secure the win.

AT TRINE (25-22, 20-25, 25-20, 25-23)

  • The Sabres opened its match with Trine leading 12-10 but the Thunder then scored five straight points to take a three-point lead.
  • The two squads traded the lead until Trine had a 21-20 lead and finished the match on a 4-2 run, the Sabres would thwart two set points.
  • Trine had a 7-6 advantage to start the second but Marian went on a big 12-3 run to lead 18-10.
  • The Thunder trimmed that deficit down to one only for Marian to take the set with a 4-1 spurt.
  • A 10-2 run from the Thunder saw Trine lead 12-7 in the third.
  • Marian was able to chip away and tied the set at 18-18, but Trine finished the set with a 7-2 run.
  • The Sabres had a big rally in the fourth after opening the set down 20-13.
  • Marian was able to trim its deficit down to 22-20 and fought off three set-point chances before Trine closed out the match.

  • Marian and DePauw each had 49 kills, while the Tigers held a slim 75-72 edge in digs.
  • Against Trine, the Thunder had a small 46-44 advantage in kills and each squad had 45 digs.
  • The Marian front row had 10 blocks against Trine.
  • The Tiger defense forced 44 Marian hitting errors and had 17 blocks.
  • The meeting with DePauw was the first between the two schools, while Trine earned its first win over the Sabres.
  • The other meeting between the Thunder and the Sabres was a Marian sweepin 1998.

Junior Ryanne Jasica had a match-high 17 kills against Trine and 13 digs against DePauw.
Junior Harley Bartels had 13 kills off of a .345 hitting percentage against DePauw and five total blocks against Trine.
Junior Alana McDermott had a match-high 19 digs with three service aces against DePauw. She then went for a match-high 13 digs against Trine.
