Sabre women’s soccer salvages draw with late goal

Marian University women’s soccer (4-2-3, 3-1-0 NACC) finished non-conference play with a 2-2 draw against Cornell at home.

  • The Sabres were able to control play for most of the first half.
  • Cornell found its grove at the end of the half scoring at the 41:51 mark and 44:47 mark to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
  • A rejuvenated Sabre squad dominated the entire 45 minutes of the second half.
  • Freshman Ysabella Sanchez got Marian on the board with a strike from 25 yards out that hit the crossbar and bounced in just 10:25 into the first half.  The goal was her first collegiate score.
  • The Marian offense continued to create several opportunities with freshman Emily Gordillo nearly tying the game in the 83rd minute but her strike nicked the crossbar.
  • A free kick from junior Ashley York found senior Lillian Giron in the box who finally provided Marian its equalizer, her fourth goal of the year, with just 1:20 left to play.

  • Marian finished with a 30-15 edge in shots and outshot Cornell 21-1 in the second half.
  • The Sabres created 12 corner kick chances with 10 of them coming in the second half.
  • This was just the second meeting between the two squads with the first coming in 2016, a 3-2 Ram victory.
  • Marian has scored multiple goals in three straight games after being held to one or fewer goals in the previous four games.

Junior Ashley York earned her first point as a Sabre with an assist on the game-tying goal.
