Sabre women’s lacrosse holds on for season-opening win over Elmhurst

Marian University women’s lacrosse (1-0, 0-0 NACC) held off a late Blue Jay rally to open their 2026 season with a 6-5 win.

  • Sophomore Chloe Yanez scored the Sabres’ first goal of the season early in the first quarter.
  • Building on that momentum, freshman Elizabeth Van Ryzin scored off an assist from junior Cielo Martinez.
  • Freshman Talia Bellotti scored a woman-down goal, part of a two-goal quarter that gave the Sabres a 4-0 lead.
  • The Blue Jays responded right before halftime with a goal and again at the start of the third, trimming the lead to two.
  • A busy third quarter from Yanez, who recorded a goal and an assist, pushed the Marian advantage to 6-2 heading into the fourth.
  • Three unanswered goals from Elmhurst cut the Sabres’ lead to one with 7:13 remaining.
  • Marian held firm, limiting the Blue Jays to zero shot attempts in the final seven minutes.
  • Belotti’s ground ball with 14 seconds left all but sealed the win for Marian.
