Sabre women’s lacrosse drops season opener to Hendrix

Marian University women’s lacrosse (0-1, 0-0 NACC) rallied from a slow start but fell to Hendrix by a 6-5 final.

  • Hendrix struck first scoring a pair of goals in the first 3:57 of the game.
  • Junior Emma Heide got Marian on the board scoring a man-down goal with 8:54 left in the first quarter.
  • Fellow junior Izzy Newton found the back of the net just 2:04 later with an assist from senior Nichole Stachon to tie the game.
  • A pair of goals from the Warriors in the final 3:35 of the stanza gave Hendrix a 4-2 lead after 15 minutes.
  • The Warriors struck with a man-down goal just 56 seconds into the second to lead 5-2.
  • Marian was then able to find momentum with Newton scoring with 9:13 on the clock and senior Kayla Kolpitcke with 5:30 remaining.
  • This put Marian behind just 5-4 going into halftime.
  • The Sabres came out strong to open the second half and Newton completed a hat trick to tie the game 3:17 into the second half.
  • Both defenses dominated as the remainder of the second half was filled with turnovers.
  • The Warriors would find the go-ahead goal with 7:28 left in the fourth quarter and Marian was unable to find an equalizer.

  • Marian outshot Hendrix 21-16 with a 14-7 edge in the second half.
  • The Warriors held a slim advantage in ground balls by 44-43 and draw controls 8-5.
  • The Sabre defense limited Hendrix just 2-of-7 (.286) on free-position shots and held the Warriros to 14-of-30 (.466) on clear attempts.
  • This was the first meeting between the two programs.
