Sabre women’s ice hockey drops season opener to MSOE

Marian University women’s ice hockey (0-1-0, 0-0-0-0 NCHA) dropped its season opener to MSOE by a 3-1 final.

  • The Sabres were able to strike first when sophomore Olivia Church-Sowinski scored an unassisted goal 8:10 into the game.
  • Special teams then became a factor as MSOE tied the game with 5:48 left in the period.
  • Marian was able to stave off the opening portion of a 5-on-3 in the second period, but MSOE capitalized on the 5-on-4 portion of a power play to take the lead at the 10:44 mark.
  • The Raiders then extended their lead with the only goal of the third period coming with just 7:02 left to play.

  • Marian finished with a 26-21 advantage for shots in the defeat.
  • The Sabre penalty kill allowed two goals on six chances, while the Marian power play was scoreless on four opportunities.
  • Marian had more faceoff wins by a 28-24 clip.
  • This was the first game in the history of MSOE women’s ice hockey.
