Sabre women’s basketball sputters at home against Spartans

Marian University women’s basketball (3-10, 1-3 NACC) fell at home to Aurora by a 67-42 final.

  • Marian held a slim 9-7 lead to open the game but Aurora ended the opening quarter with a 7-2 spurt to lead 14-11 at the end of one.
  • The Sabres were able to trim its deficit to 19-17 before the Spartans scored 10 unanswered points to go into halftime leading 29-17.
  • Another strong finish to the third quarter saw Aurora go on a 14-6 run to lead 48-28 heading into the fourth.
  • The Spartans were able to close the game out outscoring Marian 19-14 in the final stanza to set the final at 67-42.

  • The Sabres finished 14-of-59 (.237) from the field and 4-of-19 (.211) on three-pointers.
  • Aurora shot 26-of-83 (.313) and 10-of-35 (.286) from beyond the arc.
  • The Sabre defense held Aurora to fewer than 70 points for just the third time this season.
  • Marian had 24 turnovers and were outscored 25-8 in points off turnovers.
  • The Spartans had 23 offensive boards and outscored the Sabres 19-7 in second-chance points.
  • Marian is now just 3-21 against Aurora with defeats in the last 16 games.

Junior Chelsea King had eight points in just 10 minutes of action.
Senior Lyla Bartol had six points to go with a team-high eight rebounds.
