Sabre women’s basketball rallies but falls at Rockford

A slow start was too much to overcome as Marian University women’s basketball (6-16, 4-9 NACC) fell at Rockford 68-59.

  • Rockford scored the first seven points of the game and quickly found themselves ahead 17-4.
  • The Sabres cut that deficit down to as small as eight but trailed 21-11 at the end of the opening quarter.
  • Another strong start in the second saw the Regents open with a quick 8-2 spurt.
  • Rockford would also close the quarter strong scoring 10 unanswered to go into the half leading 43-22.
  • Marian was able to chip away at the deficit in the third quarter outscoring Rockford 20-12.
  • The Sabres still trailed 55-42 going into the final 10 minutes.
  • Similarly to the third, Marian outscored Rockford 17-13 but couldn’t find a big run to get back in the game.

  • Marian shot 19-of-61 (.311) in the game and just 3-of-17 (.176) on three-pointers.
  • The Regents would go 23-of-65 (.354) and 11-of-32 (.344) from beyond the arc.
  • The Sabres controlled the paint outscoring Rockford 32-20 despite being outrebounded 51-40.
  • Marian also won the turnover battle by a 14-9 margin.
  • The Sabres have now lost four of the last five games to Rockford.

Sophomore Chelsea King netted a game-high 19 points and had four rebounds.
Sophomore Kiara Williams nearly had a double-double scoring 17 points with nine rebounds.
Junior Lyla Bartol added 10 points with five boards and a block.
