Sabre women’s basketball rallies but defeated by Lakeland

Marian University women’s basketball (2-6, 0-2 NACC) outscored Lakeland in the second half but was defeated by Lakeland 65-55.

  • Lakeland was able to jump out to a 14-5 lead in a first quarter that saw both offenses come out firing.
  • Marian trimmed that deficit down to as little as four only to have the Muskies build a 12-point lead in the final minute of the stanza.
  • The Sabres would score the final five points of the quarter to go into the first break down 25-18.
  • The second quarter was all Lakeland as the Muskies outscored Marian 17-4 to go into halftime ahead 42-22.
  • Lakeland opened the second half strong building its lead out to 23 points at 50-27.
  • Marian was able to rally over the final 6:45 using a 15-2 spurt to only trail 52-42 going into the final stanza.
  • The two teams went back-and-forth in the fourth with Marian unable to chip into its deficit.
  • The Sabres outscored Lakeland 33-23 in the second half but fell by a final of 65-55.

  • Marian shot 21-of-64 (.328) for the game and only 4-of-29 (.138) from beyond the arc.
  • The Sabres went a combined 15-of-34 (.441) during the first and third quarters.
  • Lakeland shot 24-of-61 (.393) with 8-of-31 (.258) coming on three-pointers.
  • The Sabre defense held the Muskies to zero three-pointers in the second half on 10 attempts.
  • The turnover battle leaned towards Lakeland by just one but Marian outscored the Muskies 11-3 in points off turnovers.
  • The Lakeland bench had a solid performance outscoring the Marina bench 32-8.
  • Marian falls to 10-59 against Lakeland all-time and has lost the last four match-ups.

Junior Lexi Brakebush added 11 points with two assists and two steals.
Junior McKayla Goebel had seven points and five rebounds in her first start of the season.
