Sabre women’s basketball drops homestand opener

Marian University women’s basketball (3-13, 1-6 NACC) fell to Wisconsin Lutheran 74-59 to open a three-game homestand.

  • A three-pointer from senior Lexi Brakebush put Marian down 8-5 in the opening minutes before WLC scored the next eight points to build a double-digit lead.
  • The Warriors held onto that lead and went into the second quarter ahead 20-10.
  • A strong start to the second quarter saw WLC go on a 10-4 run to lead 30-14.
  • Marian wouldn’t go away quietly chipping the deficit down to 10 and only trailing 36-26 going into halftime.
  • The third quarter was a seesaw battle with WLC outscoring Marian 18-16 to lead by 12 going into the final stanza.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran opened the final quarter on a 9-2 spurt to break the game open.
  • Marian rallied late scoring nine of the final 11 points to put the final at 74-59.
  • Marian finished 20-of-51 (.392) from the field and 6-of-14 (.429) from beyond the arc.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran shot 25-of-64 (.391) and 6-of-24 (.250) on three-pointers.
  • Marian was outscored by three or fewer points in three of the four quarters.
  • The Sabres continued to shoot well at the free-throw line going 13-of-15 (.867).
  • WLC had 16 offensive rebounds and outscored Marian 21-0 in second-chance points.
  • The Warriors also had a 23-10 edge in points off turnovers.
  • Marian is now just 11-56 against WLC all-time having dropped the last 31 meetings.

 Senior Lexi Brakebush had a team-high 14 points and a pair of assists.

Junior Chelsea King chipped in 11 points and five rebounds.
Junior Imani Ninham scored 11 points off of the bench.
