Sabre softball splits with Dominican

Marian University softball (12-12, 9-5 NACC) erupted for six runs in the sixth inning to rally for a 7-6 win in game one before dropping game two of a doubleheader with Dominican.

GAME 1 

  • Marian loaded the bases in the first and held Dominican to one hit through three innings, but couldn’t push any runs across. 
  • That changed in the fourth as sophomore Aubrey Bender plated senior Carissa Heisdorf with a double. 
  • Dominican came to life in the fifth, scoring six runs on five hits to take a 6-1 lead. 
  • With their backs against the wall, the Sabres answered with six runs in the sixth, with junior Mackenzie Christofferson and sophomore Macey Pease each driving in two.
  • Junior Savanna Knuth held the Stars to one hit over the final two innings and struck out two to help secure the comeback win for Marian. 

GAME 2 

  • Dominican plated one run in the first, while Marian went down in order. 
  • The Stars added another run in the third on a sacrifice fly, extending their lead to two. 
  • The Sabres left two on base in the fourth, with Christofferson advancing to third, but came away empty. 
  • Knuth’s sacrifice fly drove in senior Ariana Schliepp in the sixth to cut the deficit to one. 
  • Dominican retired Marian in the seventh without a run to sneak past the Sabres in game two.

GAME 1

  • The Sabres and Stars were even, each collecting eight hits. 
  • Dominican committed two errors to Marian’s one, and the Stars took advantage with two unearned runs in the fifth.
  • Junior Erin Cowe drew three walks, the most by a Sabre this season. 
  • Christofferson led Marian with 11 putouts, marking her second straight game with that total.
  • The win snapped a six-game losing streak against the Stars. 

GAME 2

  • Christofferson extended her hitting streak to eight games, recording two hits in each game against Dominican. 
  • Marian outhit Dominican 5-3 but never had more than one hit in an inning.
  • Neither team had an error in game two.
  • The Sabres hold a 24-23 advantage in the all-time series.
