Sabre softball heads into off day after sweep

Marian University softball (1-5, 0-0 NACC) suffered losses to John Jay and Alma heading into its off day.

GAME 1 (JOHN JAY, L, 16-5, 6 Inn.)

  • John Jay was on the board first in the top of the second but a double from senior Carissa Heisdorf in the third gave Marian a 2-1 lead.
  • A sacrifice fly from fellow senior Ariana Schliepp later in the inning gave Marian a 3-1 advantage.
  • The Bloodhounds tied the game in the fourth and took a 9-3 lead after plating six runs in the fifth.
  • Heisdorf hit a solo shot to lead off the Sabre fifth to give Marian life, but John Jay took advantage of walks to score seven times in the sixth.
  • Sophomore Aubrey Bender drove home a run in the bottom half of the frame to set the final.

GAME 2 (ALMA, L, 5-1)

  • Marian was able to start strong with Schliepp driving in a run before Alma took its first swings.
  • The Sabre lead held until the third when the Scots tied the game.
  • Alma was then able to take its first lead an inning later with a pair of runs.
  • A two-out double in the sixth gave Alma a pair of insurance runs and helped set the final at 5-1.

  • John Jay had one error leading to an unearned run, while Marian had two errors but didn’t allow an unearned run.
  • The top three Marian hitters went a combined 5-for-10 with four runs driven in.
  • This was the first meeting between the two schools.

  • Marian was limited to just two hits with Alma recording eight hits.
  • The Sabres committed four errors leading to three unearned runs.
  • Marian drew three hit by pitches, their third game this season with multiple hit by pitches.
  • This was the first meeting between the two teams.
