Sabre NCAA men’s hockey settles for one point in opener with MSOE

Marian University NCAA men’s hockey (7-11-0, 2-7-1-1 NCHA) earned a point in its series opener with MSOE falling in overtime 3-2.

  • Marian was able to get on the board early when newcomer Sheldon Kwiatkowski scored just 4:04 into the game.
  • MSOE had an answer shortly after tying the game at the 8:01 mark.
  • The 1-1 stalemate would hold going into the second period.
  • The Raiders were able to take their first lead of the game with 7:51 left in the second period with a short-handed goal.
  • Marian quickly evened the score at the beginning of the third period when freshman Caden Carlson scored his sixth goal of the season just 2:36 in.
  • The Carlson goal proved to be enough to force overtime.
  • MSOE controlled the puck for all of the extra session and earned the extra point with a goal 1:27 in.

  • Marian recorded more shots in two of the three periods but trailed MSOE for the game by a 38-28 margin.
  • Each team had three power play chances but neither penalty kill unit allowed a goal.
  • The Sabres held a small edge in face offs by a 32-30 margin.
  • This is the first point Marian has earned against MSOE in the regular season since 2020.

Senior Aaron Brunn (7-9-0) made 35 saves in the tough-luck loss.  It was his third performance this season with at least 35 stops.
