Sabre NCAA men’s hockey nearly forces mini-game with No. 11/12 Trine

Marian University NCAA men’s ice hockey (9-16-2, 8-10-0 NCHA) was able to force overtime but was eliminated from the NCHA Harris Cup Playoffs with a 3-2 overtime loss against No. 11/12 Trine.

  • The opening period nearly went scoreless until junior Hayden Tuba lit the lamp with help from fellow junior Cole Carlson with just 26.1 seconds left.
  • Trine found its equalizer late in the second period with 1:51 on the clock.
  • The Thunder then took their first lead of the game at the 8:14 mark of the third period.
  • Junior Nolan Flint put the game at an even 2-2 with 5:41 left in regulation with assists to junior Colin Handy and sophomore Edison Weeks.
  • This proved to be enough to force overtime where Trine netted the game-winner 1:58 into the extra session.

  • Shots were in favor of Trine by a 40-25 margin.
  • The Thunder also had a 48-31 edge for face-offs.
  • Neither team had a power-play goal with Marian having two chances and Trine four.
  • Marian has now dropped 10 straight NCHA Harris Cup Playoff games.
