Sabre NCAA men’s hockey falls in Battle of Highway 41 opener

Marian University NCAA men’s ice hockey  (3-9-2, 2-6-0 NCHA) scored first but dropped the opener of the Battle of Highway 41 rivalry to Lawrence 4-2.

  • The Sabres had a strong start when sophomore Edison Weeks scored just 2:15 into the game, assists to fellow sophomores Dayne Tews and Eemil Rautio.
  • The lead lasted just 49 seconds when Lawrence scored on a power play to even the tally.
  • The Vikings then took their first lead in the final minute of the period.
  • Lawrence scored the only goal of the second period and the opener of the third to lead 4-1.
  • Freshman Andrew Politoski scored his first collegiate goal, an extra-attacker goal, to bring Marian to within two.
  • Senior Noah Pickart and freshman Andrew Seminara each had an assist.
  • Marian was unable to bring the game any closer with the final settling at 4-2.

  • The Sabres limited Lawrence to just two shots on goal in the second period.
  • Lawrence had the lone power-play goal going 1-for-3 while Marian was scoreless on four chances.
