Sabre NCAA men’s hockey drops heartbreaker to No. 5/7 Aurora

Marian University men’s ice hockey (6-11-0, 3-7-0 NCHA) went toe-to-toe with No. 5/7 Aurora for a second straight day but fell to the Spartans 4-3.

  • Aurora was able to strike quickly and took a 2-0 lead after the first 20 minutes of action.
  • Marian had a strong first seven minutes of the second period to lead 3-2.
  • Just 15 seconds into the period freshman Robert Pizzey was able to light the lamp with an assist from fellow freshman Brandon Modde.
  • Then at the 2:01 mark sophomore Nolan Flint evened the score with assists from Modde and junior Noah Pickart.
  • Freshman Brendan Bottem struck on the power play at the 6:56 mark to give Marian its first lead with assists from Pickart and senior Jaymes Knee.
  • The Spartans responded with a power-play goal with 6:42 left in the period to send the two squads into the final period tied at 3-3.
  • There weren’t many quality chances in the final period but the Spartans found a game-winner on a power play with just 2:00 left to complete the sweep.

  • Marian was outshot 33-25 in the game but had a 36-30 advantage for face-offs.
  • The Sabres were 1-for-3 on the power play and Aurora had two goals on three chances.
  • Marian is now 10-9-1 all-time against Aurora.

Freshman Brandon Modde had his first multi-point game of the season with two assists.
Freshman Nicholas Von Kaufmann (0-3-0) finished with a season-high 29 saves.
