Sabre men’s volleyball swept in California opener

Marian University men’s volleyball (9-9, 3-3 NACC) was defeated 25-14, 25-18, 25-23 by No. 7 Cal Lutheran to open the Cal-Lu-Fornia Invitational.

  • Marian trailed just 12-10 in the opening set before Cal Lutheran went on a 6-1 run to pull ahead.
  • The Regals ended the set scoring four of the final five points.
  • After a 6-4 start for CLU in the second, the Regals were able to once again pull away going on a 6-2 spurt.
  • Cal Lutheran opened the third set with an 18-13 advantage but Marian was able to make things interesting scoring five of the next six points and trail by just one.
  • The two squads traded points the rest of the way, however, leading CLU to a sweep.

  • The Regals finished with a 39-30 edge for kills and 33-29 advantage in digs.
  • Marian had a tough time defensively as CLU hit .413 in the match with just six hitting errors.
  • Cal Lutheran held a 14-3 edge for blocks at the net.
  • Marian is 0-3 all-time against CLU.

Freshman Adrian Calderon had 11 kills to go with five digs and two service aces.
Senior Derek Wills also had 11 kills to go with four digs and an assisted block.
Senior Aaron Velasco recrorded a match-high 11 digs.
