Sabre men’s volleyball suffers reverse sweep at Illinois Wesleyan

Marian University men’s volleyball (5-1, 0-0 NACC) suffered its first loss of the season falling at Illinois Wesleyan 21-25, 21-25, 25-22, 27-25, 16-14.

  • Marian trailed just 14-13 in the opening set before the Titans went on a 5-2 run to lead by four at 19-15.
  • The Sabres flipped the table using an 8-1 spurt to lead 23-20 and took the set after back-to-back points.
  • The second set similarly was tight at the start and saw the Titans hold a 19-15 advantage.
  • IWU took this lead out to 21-19 before another Sabre rally saw Marian score six straight points, two of which were service aces from junior Abel Bassett, to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Marian opened the third set with an 8-1 lead and held its advantage out to 13-8.
  • Illinois Wesleyan responded with a 9-3 spurt to take a 17-16 lead.
  • The Sabres were able to retake the lead at 20-19 before the Titans forced a fourth scoring six of the final eight points.
  • The Titans had an 18-14 edge in the fourth before Marian got back into the set with a 7-2 run.
  • After IWU retook the lead at 23-21, Marian scored three straight points but were unable to capitalize on the match-point opportunity.
  • The Sabres were able to hold off one set-point chance from the Titans, but IWU was able to capitalize on the second and forced a fifth set.
  • The largest lead in the fifth set was just three points and IWU had a 14-12 advantage.
  • As they did all night, Marian fought back holding off two match-point chances for IWU.
  • After back-to-back kills from the Sabres tied the set at 14-14, IWU scored back-to-back points to complete the reverse sweep.

  • Illinois Wesleyan held a 62-58 edge for kills and a 61-59 advantage for digs.
  • The Titans also finished with 15 blocks to just nine for Marian.
  • Marian hit .182 in the match, while IWU had a .236 hitting percentage.
  • The Sabres had 10 service errors to 18 from the Titans.
  • The two squads have now split the two matches they have played all-time.
