Sabre men’s hockey falters late at No. 15 Trine

Marian University NCAA men’s hockey (3-8-0, 2-6-0-0 NCHA) suffered a sweep against No. 15 Trine falling 6-3.

  • Marian was able to get out to a quick start with freshman Caden Carlson scoring a power-play goal just 2:10 into the game.  Senior Ty Mosimann and sophomore Alex Enegren each had an assist.
  • Trine had a response just 2:17 later to quickly tie the game at 1-1.
  • The Sabres wasted no time retaking the lead when freshman Hayden Tuba scored his first collegiate goal just 27 seconds later.  Fellow freshman Deepkaran Hans and junior Matteo Pecchia each assisted the goal.
  • The 2-1 lead for the Sabres would hold going into the first intermission.
  • The Thunder would strike for three goals in a span of 2:33 in the second period to lead 4-1.
  • Trine continued its push opening a 5-2 lead 5:08 into the third period.
  • Senior Alex Rondeau was able to cut the Marian deficit down to two scoring with 4:40 left to play, Mosimann and freshman Brendan Merriman each assisted.
  • The Thunder would ice the game with an empty-net goal with just 1:45 to play.

  • Trine held a 47-18 advantage for shots in the game.
  • The Sabre special teams had a solid game with the power play going 1-for-3 (.333) and the penalty kill allowing zero goals on seven Trine chances.
  • The Thunder had 47 face-off wins to only 24 for Marian.
  • Trine has now won the last six meetings against Marian.

Freshman Hayden Tuba scored his first collegiate goal.
Senior Aaron Brunn (3-7-0) had another big night with a season-high 41 saves.
