Sabre men’s basketball finishes first half against No. 7 UW-Whitewater

Marian University men’s basketball (0-10, 0-5 NACC) had the ball and trailed by only two with 14:54 left to play but fell to No. 7 UW-Whitewater 80-47.

  • UW-Whitewater found a groove early and was able to lead 12-2 with 13:48 left in the half.
  • Marian was able to trim that deficit down to five only to have the Warhawks build their lead to 26-9 with a 14-4 run.
  • The Sabres ended the half strong, however, scoring the final five points to only trail 34-24 going into the break.
  • Using the momentum from the end of the first half, Marian was able to open the second half with an 11-3 spurt to only trail 37-35 with 14:54 to play.
  • A turnover on the next Marian possession helped spark a run of 24 unanswered points as UWW built out a 61-35 lead with 8:29 to play.
  • The final score would eventually settle at 80-47 after a free-throw filled finish.

  • Marian had a tough night shooting only going 15-of-52 (.288) for the game and 5-of-23 (.217) on three-pointers.
  • UWW finished 27-of-49 (.551) and 6-for-12 from beyond the arc.  The Warhawks were 14-of-23 (.609) from the field in the final 20 minutes.
  • The Sabre defense did create 19 turnovers but were outscored 27-18 in points off turnovers.
  • Marian was also outscored 17-6 in second chance points and 38-18 in the paint.

Sophomore Sam Gingras led Marian with 13 points, three steals, and two blocks.
Junior JeanLuc Wilson added 10 points to go with three steals and two assists.
Junior Marcell Drone went for six points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
