Sabre men’s basketball falls in clash with Central

Marian University men’s basketball (1-1, 0-0 NACC) ended their weekend trip to UW-Superior with a competitive loss to Central, 63-56.

  • Marian took their lone lead of the game on the opening score from sophomore Harper Krolak.
  • The Dutch then rallied off eight unanswered points to cement their momentum in the first half.
  • Central’s lead extended to as much as 13, as they went into halftime with a 35-24 lead.
  • Both teams started the second half slow, with only two combined field goals over the first four and a half minutes.
  • After the Dutch took their biggest lead of 15, the Sabres went on an 11-0 run with junior Andrew Ayeni scoring or assisting on three of the six scores.
  • Three made free throws from freshman Marvin Haslett cut the lead to two with two minutes remaining, but the Dutch were able to pull away for a 63-56 victory.

  • The Sabres shot just 1-for-12 (.083) from the arc in the first half and 5-of-28 (.179) for the game. 
  • Marian controlled in bench points, with 34, compared to Central’s 15.
  • Both teams were efficient from the free-throw line, with Marian shooting 13-17 (.765) and Central shooting 16-20 (.800).
  • The Sabres held the Dutch to 7-for-24 (.291) shooting in the second half.

Senior Alex Vassilakis grabbed 13 rebounds, including six offensive in a team-high 34 minutes.
Freshman Max Breitenbach tallied 11 points and seven rebounds in an increased role from Saturday. 
Freshman Marvin Haslett managed a game-high four steals to go along with 10 points.
