Sabre men’s basketball drops heart breaker at Benedictine

Marian University men’s basketball (0-8, 0-4 NACC) led for most of the game but fell to Benedictine 64-61 in the final seconds.

  • Benedictine had the early lead at 6-1 as both offenses struggled to find a rhythm early.
  • The Marian offense was able to got on an extended 20-3 to run to lead 21-9 with 8:25 left in the first half.
  • The Eagles were able to trim its deficit down to three points before Marian closed out the opening half with a 7-2 spurt.
  • This gave the Sabres a 34-26 advantage going into halftime.
  • Benedictine bounced back to open the second half opening the stanza with a 14-5 run to retake the lead at 40-39 with 15:23 to play.
  •  The game remained a one-possession affair until seven unanswered points from the Sabres put MU ahead 59-52 with 3:51 on the clock.
  • Benedictine quickly responded with nine unanswered of its own to take a 61-59 lead with 30 ticks.
  • Senior Mason Khalu would make a layup to tie the game at 61-61 with only 11 seconds on the clock.
  • Benedictine responded with a jumper with just three seconds left and forced a turnover on the ensuing inbound to seal a 64-61 win.

  • Marian shot 22-of-54 (.407) in the defeat with 7-of-25 (.280) shooting coming from beyond the arc.
  • The Marian defense held Benedictine to just 8-of-25 (.320) shooting in the first half, but the Eagles bounced back going 15-of-30 (.500) in the second half.
  • The Sabres only allowed the Eagles to go 4-of-18 (.222) on three-pointers.
  • Benedictine held a 36-22 edge for points in the paint scoring 26 of those points in the second half.
  • Marian falls to 7-21 all-time against Marian and has lost five of the last six meetings.
