Sabre field hockey falls in overtime thriller to Centre

Marian University field hockey (2-3, 0-1 SAA) dropped its first conference game to Centre 2-1 in an overtime thriller.

  • The game opened back-and-forth with neither team managing must on the offensive end.
  • The Colonels would turn the tide and eventually found the back of the net off of a penalty corner at the 27:17 mark.
  • This gave Centre a 1-0 lead going into halftime with the Colonels outshooting Marian 11-2 after the first 30 minutes.
  • Marian came out revitalized in the second half and tied the game just 4:59 into the second half.  
  • Sophomore Jikke Biemans would score her third goal of the season on a corner with sophomore Eva Houtackers earning an assist.
  • The 1-1 score held into the fourth quarter where each team had five shots but neither team could prevent overtime.
  • Marian opened with possession in the first overtime session, but Centre was able to create a breakaway opportunity and scored on its first chance.

  • Marian was outshot 21-10 but shots on goal were much closer at an 8-6 edge for Centre.
  • The Sabres were able to create nine penalty corners, while Centre had 14 opportunities.
  • Centre has won all three meetings all-time against Marian with the last two being decided by one goal.
  • The two squads close the season series at Centre Sunday, October 8 at 10 a.m. (CT).
  • This was the first overtime game in the history of Marian field hockey.

Freshman Emilee Clarey (2-3) made six saves in goal for Marian, her second-highest total for the season.
Sophomore Jikke Biemans scored her third goal of the season and led Marian with five shots.
Sophomore Eva Houtackers recorded her third assist of the season and had two shots.
