Sabre baseball drops extra-inning heartbreaker to end season

Marian University baseball (22-21, 14-10 NACC) saw its season come to a close falling to Aurora 2-1 in 10 innings at the NACC Tournament.

  • Aurora wasted no time opening the scoring for the elimination game with a two-out double in the first to lead 1-0.
  • The Sabres were able to force the Spartans to strand the bases loaded in the second to keep the game at 1-0.
  • Marian was able to put runners in scoring position over the next three innings but the score remained 1-0 going into the fifth.
  • The Sabres were able to spark a two-out rally in the seventh to tie the game.
  • Senior Gus Walker singled to open the rally and stole second base before scoring on a double off the bat of sophomore Marc Jones.
  • The Sabres opened the ninth with a walk and single but left the bases loaded to send the game into extras.
  • A lead-off double helped pave the way for the Spartans to score in the top of the 10th off of a sacrifice fly, which proved to be the final run of the game.
  • Marian falls to 10-28 against Aurora and 4-15 in NACC Tournament games.
  • This is the first time in program history Marian won multiple games at the NACC Tournament.
  • Marian finishes the season with a winning record for just the fifth time in the NACC era.

Sophomore Marc Jones was 2-for-3 with a walk, and he drove in the lone Marian run.
Senior Jacob Kleemann had two hits and finished the conference tournament 5-for-12 (.417) with four runs driven in.
Senior Michael Martinez (5-1) tossed 4.2 innings allowing just one run on four hits after throwing 3.2 innings the previous day.
