Sabre ACHA D2 finishes home showcase 2-1

Marian University ACHA D2 (7-2-0, 4-0-0 NCHL) went 2-1 at its home showcase defeating UW-Oshkosh and Jamestown, while falling to Sault.

GAME 1 VS. UW-OSHKOSH (W, 6-1)

  • The Sabres were able to jump out to an early lead thanks to goals from Jackson Sweeney and Serge Simard in the opening period.
  • A defensive second period saw just one goal but it was a score from Cayden Frenette to put Marian ahead 3-0.
  • The Titans opened the third with a power-play goal, but Marian was able to pull away.
  • Marian netted three goals in a span of 5:30 to take a 6-1 victory.
  • Simard and Sweeney lit the lamp for a second time sandwiched between a goal from Devon Butler.

GAME 2 VS. JAMESTOWN (W, 4-3)

  • In a rematch from the 2021 ACHA D2 National Tournament, Marian took an early lead on Jamestown with a Frenette goal in the opening stanza.
  • This proved to be the only goal of the opening period, but Jamestown bounced back in the second finding the back of the net three times.
  • Another Frenette goal 1:44 into the third period helped set the tone for a Sabre comeback.
  • Simon Ellingson was able to tie the game at the 9:11 mark of the period before Easton Nick netted the game-winning goal with 40 seconds to play.

GAME 3 VS. SAULT (L, 6-3)

  • It took Marian one minute to open the scoring for game three of the showcase with Nick lighting the lamp.
  • Two Sault power-play goals closed out the period, however, as the Sabres trailed 2-1 after 20 minutes.
  • Sault added to its lead 1:52 into the second period, but Frenette would net a power-play goal just 2:05 later to put the score at 3-2.
  • The Cougars once again closed out the period with a goal and opened the third with a score to put Marian behind 5-2.
  • Simard was able to trim the Marian deficit to 5-3 with a power-play goal with 1:34 on the clock, but a Cougar goal 34 seconds later iced the 6-3 final.

  • Marian outshot the Titans in all three periods finishing with a 52-26 advantage.
  • The Sabres had at least 15 shots in all three periods.
  • The Marian power-play unit scored twice on four chances, while the penalty kill allowed one goal on six Titan opportunities.
  • Marian improved to 16-1-0 all-time against UW-Oshkosh.

GAME 2

  • The Sabres held a 34-31 advantage for shots with a 15-7 edge coming in the final period.
  • Marian was scoreless on three power-play chances and allowed one score on four Jamestown power plays.
  • Marian is 2-0 all-time against Jamestown.

GAME 3

  • Marian was outshot 42-28 for the game with 10 shots coming in the opening period.
  • Each team had seven power-play chances with Marian scoring twice and Sault three times.
  • The Sabres are 0-2-2 all-time against Sault.

Tyler McArthur started all three games in goal finishing with 89 saves and an .899 save percentage.
Easton Nick had two goals, including the game-winner against Jamestown, to go with four assists.
