Register for Marian’s Popular UBMS College-Prep Summer Academy

Tours of colleges, businesses, and museums included in this free college-prep academy

Marian University is offering its popular college-prep summer academy to prepare and encourage potential first-generation college students and/or students from economically-challenged backgrounds to go college. The Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) Summer Academy, will be held from Monday, June 17 to Friday, July 26, 2024, with a closing ceremony on Wednesday, July 31.

This year’s theme for the UBMS Summer Academy is Shifting into Different Gears. “We’ll be focusing on helping students navigate the exciting, yet sometimes challenging transitions in their academic journeys,” said Garry Moïse, TRIO/Upward Bound Math and Science Program Director. “Participation in UBMS will equip them with a variety of tools and the support they will need to excel in life.”

The UBMS Summer Academy will include tours of college campuses and major businesses. Participants will also explore places like the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago and the Geology Museum at University of Wisconsin, Madison.
Featured classes, workshops, and seminars, held at Marian, will be taught by Marian faculty and local high school faculty. Classes include: Applied Mathematics, Environmental Science, Food Science, Latin for Math and Science, Oral Communication, and World Literature: Science Fiction. An example of a workshop is Psychology as a field of study and also as a profession. The seminars include one on GRiT. The last day of UBMS Summer Academy will showcase special projects by the students to reflect on what they learned or enjoyed the most.

Registration for the UBMS Summer Academy is currently open to students within the Fond du Lac and North Fond du Lac School Districts and spaces are limited. When it’s full, it’s full. Thanks to funding from the U.S. Department of Education, the program is available to participants and their families completely free of charge. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for students from our local community to accelerate their academic progress and explore new possibilities for personal growth,” said Moïse. “Parents, guardians, and other family members should check the eligibility requirements and discuss this opportunity with their current high schoolers and those finishing 8th grade.”
