A library card is more than something to stick in a wallet.
It’s a free ticket to area attractions. It’s a no-cost subscription to learn a new language. A chance to try a piece of equipment before buying it. It’s even a connection to a world of knowledge.
During Library Card Sign-Up Month, it’s also an opportunity to introduce a friend to these benefits and many more.
Throughout September, the Fond du Lac Public Library is encouraging community members to refer a friend to sign up for a new library card. Pick up a referral card at the library starting Sept. 1, and every time a friend drops a referral off while signing up for a new card, you will be entered in a prize drawing. The new card holder will be entered for the drawing, too.
Referral slips will be available at any service desk as well as at a special display inside the Main Library’s south entrance.
While visiting the library, be sure to try out some of the Library Card Sign-Up Month themed activities around the building.
In the Children’s Room, kids can try out a Library Joy scavenger hunt during the first half of the month or enjoy a related activity at the writing station. Adults, meanwhile, can try a library-themed word search available at the Help Desk.
Library Card Sign-up Month has been held nationally each September since 1987 to mark the beginning of the school year, combat illiteracy, and encourage communities everywhere to explore all the offerings that having a library card unlocks. Today, thousands of public libraries and schools nationwide take part in the month-long celebration each fall.
Getting a library card is free, easy, and empowering. For students, it’s a key to academic success. For adults, it’s a gateway to lifelong learning. For everyone, it’s a smart way to stay connected to your community.

Fond du Lac Public Library operates two locations: the Main Library at 32 Sheboygan St. in downtown Fond du Lac, and the Buechel Branch at 1132 E. Johnson St. near Festival Foods. The main library is open daily: Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Chapter 52 Bookstore at 52 Sheboygan St. is open Monday through Wednesday from 2 to 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., while the Buechel Branch is open weekdays from 2 to 6 p.m., and weekends from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
