Pair of two-out rallies lead Marian softball to sweep of Alverno

Marian University softball (10-4, 4-0 NACC) earned wins of 9-4 and 9-3 over Alverno in its home opener.

GAME 1

  •  A run-producing single from junior Kerena Wood opened the scoring in the first inning for Marian.
  • The Sabres would open the second with a pair of ground outs before scoring six runs to pull ahead 7-0.
  • Sophomore Ariana Schliepp and junior junior Kendall Pliner each had doubles in the rally with the Pliner two-bagger scoring two runs.
  • The Inferno would get on the board in the top of the third only for senior Katelyn Matenaer to bring in a run in the bottom half of the inning.
  • This put Marian ahead 8-1, but the lead would be cut down to four after a three-run fourth inning for Alverno.
  • The final run of the game would come from senior Evelynn Spaeth who brought in a run with a walk in the bottom half of the frame.
  • Marian finished the game with 15 hits and had seven student-athletes record multiple hits.

GAME 2

  • Another quick start for Marian saw freshman Savanna Knuth and Pliner drive in a run in the second.
  • Wood added to the Sabrelead in the third driving in a run with a single to put Marian ahead 3-0.
  • Alverno was able to score a pair of runs in the fourth inning and only trailed by one.
  • Marian loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth with one out and Alverno looked like they might escape the jam unscathed after a strikeout.
  • Schliepp would step up and started a two-out rally driving in a pair of runs with a single.
  • Marian would go on to score six runs in the frame and built a 9-2 lead.
  • Wood highlighted the rally with her second home run of the season, a two-run shot.
  • The rest of the game was quiet offensively for both sides with the Inferno scoring a single run in the sixth to put the final at 9-3.

GAME 1

Freshman McKenna Repovich (3-0) tossed 3.2 innings of relief to earn the win and only allowed three hits.
Senior Katelyn Matenaer finished 2-for-3 with two runs driven in and a run scored.
Junior Kendall Pliner went 2-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs.
