Overtime thriller goes against Sabre women’s hockey

Marian University women’s ice hockey (3-7 -0, 2-4-0-0 NCHA) began its final series of the first half falling to Lawrence 3-2 in overtime.

  • Neither side was able to find the back of the net in the opening period.
  • Lawrence was able to open the scoring with a goal 3:49 into the second period.
  • With just 5:49 left in the period, senior Madeline Chimenti was able to even the score with an assist from fellow senior Jadyn Gorski.
  • The 1-1 stalemate held heading into the final period.
  • The Sabres were able to take their first lead of the game when sophomore Olivia Church-Sowinski scored an unassisted goal 5:54 into the final period.
  • The lead for Marian didn’t last long as Lawrence found an equalizer 1:41 later, and it ultimately forced overtime.
  • Marian had a breakaway opportunity in the final period but it was the Vikings who were able to earn the non-conference win.

  • Lawrence held a 39-31 advantage for shots in the game with Marian outshooting the Vikings 13-10 in the final period.
  • Each side had two power-play chances but neither team was able to take advantage.
  • The Vikings held a hefty 33-19 edge in face-offs.
  • Marian is now 7-2-1 all-time against Lawrence with the Vikings taking the last two meetings.
