Offensive struggles lead to Sabre women’s volleyball falling to IIT

Marian University women’s volleyball (14-11, 6-6 NACC) took the opening set but fell to IIT 19-25, 25-12, 25-22, and 25-19.

  • The Scarlett Hawks jumped out to a fast 8-3 start in set one before a 6-2 run by the Sabres tied things up 9-9.
  • Marian was able to take the lead at 11-10 and grow its lead to two at 17-15.
  • The Sabres went on a 8-4 run to easily close out set one 25-19.
  • After a back-and-forth start to the second with a tied score of 9-9, the Scarlett Hawks would take set two behind a commanding 15-3 run.  
  • A similar script as set two the two squads would trade points to begin set three with a score of 6-6.
  • The Sabres jumped out to a four point lead behind a 5-1 run and would force a Scarlett Hawk timeout.
  • The back-and-fourth play continued with the Sabres keeping a four point lead 21-17 but IIT would not go down without a fight.
  • IIT ended set three on an 8-1 run taking advantage of what proved to be critical errors by the Sabres.
  • Using the momentum from the strong finish, the Scarlett Hawks got out to a 6-0 run and forced a Sabre timeout to start set four.
  • Marian crawled back into the fourth set and reduced the IIT lead to three at 12-9 and again at 17-14. 
  • The Sabre offense never quite got going in the fourth set which would lead to the Scarlett Hawks closing out set four and the match on a 8-5 run.

  • Both defenses had a strong day with IIT having the slight advantage in digs 59-57.
  • Marian was held under .100 hitting percentage for only the sixth time this season.
  • The Sabre offense recorded 32 kills while committing 31 hitting errors.

Senior Anna Tapia paced the Sabre offense with 26 assists while adding three kills.
Senior Serina Pehowski led the Sabres in kills with nine.
Senior Reagan Jasica had a team high 15 digs as well as three aces.
