No. 12 Marian ACHA D2 retains Mequondulac Cup

No. 12 Marian University ACHA D2 hockey (8-3-1, 2-3-1 NCHL) took home the Mequondulac Cup as part fo a split against No. 8 Concordia Wisconsin.

GAME 1 (AWAY, L, 3-2)

  • Blake Stafford scored the only goal of the first period 12:22 into the period.
  • The goal was assisted by Gavyn Galloway and Jackson Sweeney.
  • The Sabres put the score to 2-0 on the power play 5:20 into the second period on a power-play goal scored by Stafford.
  • Sweeney and Galloway picked up their second assists of the night as well.
  • The Falcons responded at 7:51 into the period to bring the score to 2-1 going into the final stanza.
  • An early Sabre penalty in the third period proved costly as the Falcons tied the game 2-2 1:55 into the period.
  • The tie was broken with 8:25 to go in the game by another Falcon goal to put the final at 3-2.

GAME 2 (HOME, W, 6-5)

  • The Sabres had no problem getting their offense going to start game two netting four goals in the first 20 minutes.
  • An early power-play goal scored by Connor Cozens put the Sabres up 1-0 4:38 into the first period, assists to Blake Stafford and Gavyn Galloway.
  • Cozens netted his second goal of the night 8:29 later with help from Jace Weber and Keynan Miller.
  • The Falcons responded less than a minute later to bring the score to 2-1.
  • Easton Nick answered 14:19 into the first period with an assist from Cayden Frenette.
  • The Sabres furthered their lead on a Jackson Sweeney goal with help from Frenette to head into the first break ahead 4-1.
  • Marian started out hot in the second period as ewll with Devon Butler scoring 3:09 into the first period with an assist from Anthony O’Neal.
  • Nick gave the Sabres a 6-1 lead with 1:28 remaining in the second period with another assist from O’Neal.
  • The Falcons were able to score with only 14 seconds left to bring the score to 6-2 going into the final period.
  • The Falcons pushed back scoring three unanswered goals but it was not enough as the final settled at 6-5.
  • The Sabres prevailed in a shootout to decide the winner of the Mequondulac Cup on an O’Neal goal.
  • Jackson Powers made all three saves in the shootout to help keep the rivalry trophy.

  • The Falcons led the way with shots 41-33.
  • The Sabre power play went 1-for-1 on the night.
