No. 10 Sabre ACHA D2 stunned late by No. 7 Wisconsin

No. 10 Marian University ACHA Division II (21-7-1, 5-4-1 NCHL) saw its season come to an end after falling to No. 10 Wisconsin 4-3 in overtime at the ACHA D2 Central Regional.

  • A quiet opening period saw each team fail to convert a power play and head into the second period scoreless.
  • Wisconsin opened the scoring at the 3:43 mark of the second period.
  • Cayden Frenette evened the scoring at the 7:52 mark with assists from Chris Regan and Ashton Underhill.
  • Marian then took its first lead with 4:28 left in the period when Ashton O’Neal lit the lamp with help from Gavyn Galloway.
  • The Sabres got an insurance goal from Blake Stafford 3:48 into the third period to put the Sabres ahead 3-1.
  • The Badgers cut their deficit down to one with 3:07 left in regulation and tied the game just 1:37 later.
  • Wisconsin was able to finish the comeback scoring 2:19 into overtime.

  • Neither team had a power-play goal with Marian going 0-for-2 and Wisconsin 0-for-1.
  • This was the eighth time Marian qualified for the ACHA D2 Central Regional in program history.

Blake Stafford scored his 19th goal of the season and finished the year with 40 points.
