Matta, Matenaer Earn CSC Academic All-District Recognition

Senior Katelyn Matenaer and sophomore Hope Matta of Marian University softball have been named to the Academic All-District Team by the organization College Sports Communicators (CSC).

The CSC Academic All-American program recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their efforts both in competition and in the classroom.  To be eligible, a student-athlete must compete in 90 percent of their team’s games, be a key starter or reserve on their team, and attain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5. They must also hold at least sophomore standing at their institution.

Matenaer (West Bend, Wis.) finished her career on a high note earning her third All-NACC selection along with boasting a 3.80 grade point average while studying exercise and sport science.  She closed out a dazzling career at Marian leading the team in hits with 54 and runs batted in with 31.  Matenaer was also third on the team with her 25 runs scored, while her 14 extra-base hits led to a team-best .523 slugging percentage.  She led the team at the NACC Tournament going 7-for15 at the plate with a run scored and a stolen base.  Matenaer was held without a hit in only 11 games during the season with 17 multi-hit efforts.

Matta (Valparaiso, Ind.) had an especially strong finish to the season and maintained a grade point average of 3.73 in forensic science.  She overcame a slow start to the season ranking fourth on the team with 44 hits, leading the squad with 34 runs scored and finishing with a .314 batting average.  Matta also had another strong season on the base paths ranking 10th in the NACC with her 14 stolen bases while being only caught three times.  During the regular season for the month of May, Matta hit 10-of-22 (.455) scoring nine runs with five runs driven in.  She finished the season with 12 multi-hit games and went 7-of-17 (.412) at the NACC Tournament with three runs scored.
