Marian women’s volleyball sweeps Alverno to snap skid

Marian University women’s volleyball (2-20, 1-7 NACC) earned its firs NACC win of the season defeating Alverno 28-26, 25-18, and 25-23.

  • The Sabres had a slow start and found themselves railing 8-2 to open the match.
  • The Inferno brought their lead out to 11-6 before Marian scored six straight to lead 12-11.
  • Alverno responded with a 6-1 run shortly after to lead 23-17.
  • A strong run from freshman Lily Breed saw Marian tie the set at 23-23 and stave off a set-point chance for Alverno in the next point.
  • Marian failed to convert a set-point chance of their own before a kill from senior Harley Bartels capped off the comeback.
  • The second set saw Marian score seven unanswered points to lead 11-5.
  • Alverno was able to cut their deficit down to two at 19-17 before Marian finished the set on a 6-1 spurt.
  • The third set was tightly contested with the largest lead for either side being only three points.
  • The momentum swung both ways with the score eventually settling at 23-23.
  • Marian was then able to end the match with kills from freshman Cassandra Arndt and senior Jenna Butschlick.

  • Marian finished with a 42-33 edge in kills and 60-49 advantage in digs.
  • The Sabres had at least 11 kills in all three sets and had an attack percentage of .308 in the second.
  • Marian was able to benefit from 10 Alverno service errors.
  • The Sabres improve to 25-0 all-time against the Inferno with this being the sixth straight sweep.

Senior Mikalah Mueller led the way with a team-high eight kills and a  match-high 14 digs.
Senior Natalie Dempze-Enkro followed suit with seven kills and 13 digs.
Freshman Lily Breed had 25 assists and four service aces.
